The Level Up Career Conference will broaden the young adults’ perspectives on different career paths and help them develop key skills to succeed.
The theme for July’s Level Up Career Conference is “Career Burnout to Balance.” The conference focuses on sparking conversation among young adults regarding the importance of work-life balance and how to prevent burnout, a topic that is increasingly relevant in today’s demanding labour market. Invited panelists will touch on their personal experiences and coping strategies. With an audience of mainly undergraduate university students, working professionals looking for a career change, and a segment of high-achieving high school students, you will reach and impact numerous ambitious individuals.

Justin is an enigmatic, experienced, and entrepreneurial Canada and USA lawyer. From representing shareholder plaintiffs in multimillion dollar securities class actions, to forming and structuring companies, to distressed mothers or fathers in family law actions, Justin has been through it all. He is a leader in the American Bar Association and serves as a Council member for the Rule of Law Initiative for the Asia Pacific region. Justin also spends time at Ryerson University as an Assessor in the lawyer Licensing Process Program. When not spending time as a lawyer, he works in the community for youth oriented programs.
Cherrie Chiu is the founder of ALSDoublePlay, Power Unit Youth Organization’s beneficiary this year. After her brother’s diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that leaves those affected gradually paralyzed, Cherrie and her family founded ALSDoubleplay to raise funds to donate to Canadian charities that are researching better treatment methods and looking for a cure. She hopes that her organization will make a long-lasting, positive impact on the lives of people who are living with this disease, and that her efforts will result in widespread awareness.
Baron is the founding instructor of Gusta Cooking Studio, where he endeavours to promote the importance of taste through culinary and pastry classes, while providing access to ingredients and tools normally reserved for professionals. His background in linguistics and public relations remotely but vividly comes into play in his tasty business. An avid reader of cookbooks, he enjoys constant challenges, intellectually or gustatorily.
Leila Knetsch isn’t your average high school science teacher. She likes to do fun demos with her students such as lighting her arm on fire, making a giant toothpaste, and igniting an acetylene "bomb". She has also spoken at various conferences across the TDSB and other outreach occasions. A warm and exciting person, Ms. Knetsch will definitely answer all your questions about teaching and science while keeping you super engaged.
Veronica Chan is a consultant paediatrician who recently finished her specialty training at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa. Her journey leading up to medicine was typical in many ways. At 14, a father figure's untimely life-limiting illness motivated Veronica to work towards helping others in his shoes. And in medical school, she soon learned that nothing would be more meaningful than spending one's career advocating for those who could not stand up for themselves. Her adventures in paediatrics have taken her from the youth shelters of inner city Hamilton, to 3000 feet in the air above the Arctic Circle, and she wouldn't trade this job for anything else!
Vincent Chio is a senior data engineer at Shopify where he led his team in applying machine learning to build marketing intelligence to drive merchants' business. Prior to that, Vincent was a software developer at BlackBerry building multimedia applications for BlackBerry's flagship mobile devices.
Kevin Folz is a Software Engineer who recently achieved his dream career working for AMD. The dream started with a Bachelor of Software Engineering with a minor in Embedded Systems at McMaster University. After 6 years experience in the field of broadcast media it was time to set sights higher. Luki is a former management consultant at Deloitte with 12+ years of experience. He left as a Senior Manager and practice area lead of 20-25 people, responsible for several millon dollar projects/accounts, as well as being a recognized global subject matter expert. He was also the former campus recruiting lead (nationally for tech consulting). He has lots of resume screening, interview and mentoring experience. Plus he literally was responsible for the yes/no list with those that would be hired. Since then he has found passion in helping others reach their career potential. Emily Chen has an Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, and later obtained a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) from Schulich School of Business specializing in finance and international business. Upon graduation, Emily was employed by IBM Canada and later joined Kraft Canada. Emily obtained her Real Estate Broker license in 2005. In 2008, she followed her passion and established her own Real Estate Corporation – Capital Edge Real Estate Corp.
Winson’s job is to help Microsoft’s end customers evaluate and understand how to best use and understand the data platform technology that Microsoft sells. He ensures that Microsoft’s end customers regard him as a trusted advisor. He has also done videos, trainings, and tons of conferences. A dedicated and focused professional, he credits his present position to a lot of hard work and and building on every step of his career.
Chris Nearing is also an on-shift instructor as well as a trained paramedic. Apart from his job, he is the president of his local sports association. Chris worked in construction in the 1980s, and then attended community college to become a firefighter. He is committed to public service and helping others, and appreciates the great reward his job brings--traits, he says, that fit extremely well with his profession. After 22 years in the service, he has a lot of stories to tell.
Baun Mah has worked as a senior editor for shows such as Amazing Race, Big Brother, Chopped and Canada’s Got Talent. Mah has directed an Award Winning Documentary, Chink in the Armour. He graduated from Ryerson University in the Film Studies Department.
Steven Kung is a University of Toronto Varsity Blues player with many achievements, such as OUA player of the Year, OUA All-Rookie Team, Three-Time OUA All-Star, CIS All-Rookie Team, Three-Time CIS All-Canadian. He plays for the Canadian Junior National Indoor/Beach Team and Team Ontario Beach. Kung is also the Head Coach of York Mills Collegiate Institute and Clinic coach for REACH Volleyball Academy/Club and also coaches Toronto District School Board High School Volleyball (York Mills CI Boys, Girls).
Rebecca Lee Bentham received NCAA Division 1 scholarship to play for the University of Texas Longhorns and was the winner of Canadian Jr. Girls Championship at 18 years of age. Bentham is currently a golf pro at Lionhead Golf Club.
Tiffiny Lai graduated from the George Brown Sports and Event Marketing Program and has a BA in Communications Studies. She deals with community relations and works with Basketball Development Teams at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Lai represented Canada in multiple basketball competitions in the U.S. She also competes in body-building and fitness figure competitions.

Sam Morsy is currently the Marketing Coordinator at TSN and the former News Editor of the Score. Sma has also worked as the Team U.S.A. Basketball Host at the Pan/Para Pan Am Games and was the former forward to Ottawa Celtics AAU Club Team.
Roy Lee has done special effects for a number of TV shows and movies including Love Bites, Hemlock Grove, Saw 8 (2017), Taken, It (2017), and Beauty and the Beast. The films Lee has worked on have earned numerous awards such as Court Metrage Festival de Cannes 2015, Rhode Island International Film Festival 2015, and CAAMFEST 2016 (Center for Asian American Media).
Elena Juatico is a former host of Canadian Idol. She has played characters in a number of movies and TV shows including Open Heart on YTV, the Oscar-award winning ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Kodachrome’ performed in a number of musical productions including Les Miserables, Kinky Boots, and Miss Saigon. Juatco recently released her debut album Beyond This Line.
